Emily De Ferrari: On Killing Flies with Dr. Seuss
I killed them in the window.
I killed them on the door.
And when I killed a hundred flies
I kept on killing more.
Why is my heart so cruel,
that I can’t love the flies?
I feel no soulful sorrow
as each one falls and dies?
Their fragile bodies smashed
upon the window glass;
do I feel satisfaction?
Yes! You bet your ass!
But, Albert Schweitzer, I’ve been told,
never let the hate take hold.
He let the little buggers be
even whilst in surgery.
And I’ll admit, a little bit,
that as I swat and whack,
I find them quite inspiring
for they keep coming back.
