Springsteen penned the song on Saturday and released it on Wednesday “in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis,” the artist said.

The Boss made a surprise visit to iconic Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue on Friday to play his newly recorded “Streets of Minneapolis” at a benefit concert for the families of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. The crowd erupted when Springsteen took the stage. The crowd chanted “ICE out now” after he wrapped up the song which he wrote in the hours after Pretti’s shooting. The music video has garnered over 10 million views on YouTube and occupies the No. 1 spot on iTunes.

I weep to see this. and will point friends its way, too. Am proud to have lived in Minneapolis, and now St. Paul. We are a caring community, but it is a bitter winter, and evil winds still blow.
Springsteen confronts evil as he best knows how. His music written about 9/11 is also exemplary and moving. But much of it was a dirge. This is more a call to witness, remember, and respond.
