Video: American Seams | The Plains

The stories of three quilters combine to reveal an intimate portrait of rural women in the American West. Featuring Brenda Bailey, Sara Buscaglia, and Susan “Traditional Woman” Hudson.

Running time: 16 minutes

A glimpse into the lives of three quilters in the American West. The filmmakers explore these women’s stories, which both complement and contrast with one another, as sweet music and lovely cinematography invite us into stunning landscapes and their homes in rural Colorado, Utah, and the Navajo Nation of New Mexico. Through intimate conversations and a careful unfolding of the creative processes that produce their gorgeous quilts, we appreciate the beauty of place and the expert craftsmanship that connect the three women’s experiences. This beautiful short film feels whimsical and weighty all at once. (source: Full Frame Documentary Film Festival)

One of the best things ever, Michael. Thanks xo

It brought me back, too, to working with poet Michael Longley on a chapbook called Broken Dishes – the title being taken from an Amish quilt he had seen. We were able to reproduce a picture of the quilt as a frontispiece to the book. We also started the book with his own epigraph, which runs:

Sometimes the quilts were white for weddings, the design

Made up of stitches and the shadows cast by stitches.

And the quilts for funerals? How do you sew the night?

I wish I knew how to share a picture of the quilt a dear friend made for me during my cancer treatments. It incorporates all the beautiful things in nature that I love and the colors! It helped my healing and provided a touchstone for memories of my friend who moved to Missouri so many years ago.

Beauty, power, healing, spirituality of quilting…visual rhapsody…patterned poems of color, restoration from pain–no words quite match their work.

Thank you so much, Laure-Anne. When my son was a teenager he skateboarded. I was terrified he would hit his head.

In all the flimflam and larceny of our current government, it’s important to remember what lies at the heart of America. These three women are creating beautiful art in three different American cultures not for money or fame but for love and beauty. To hell with Trump and his latest grift, there is an American spirit worth preserving and, if necessary, fighting for.
