David Kirby: My Sunday
My Sunday is doing great
it’s driving along at 35 mph with its sleeves rolled up
and one arm out the window
dog with its head out the window barking at nothing
oh watch out for that woman there
she didn’t see the stop sign
people say you dodged a bullet that time
but aren’t we always dodging them
somebody just waved
it’s that poet who writes all his poems in CAPITAL LETTERS
objects in that poet’s side-view mirror may appear closer than they are
velocity and truth is a good motto
keep it honest and keep it fast
not on Sunday though
look slobber is flying out of the dog’s mouth
and gunking up the windshield of the guy in the car behind ours
he’s honking his horn now and shaking his fist
what’s his problem
Poet, critic, and scholar David Kirby grew up on a farm in southern Louisiana. Since 1969 he has taught at Florida State University, where he has received several teaching awards. He lives in Tallahassee, Florida, with his wife, poet Barbara Hamby. His many books include Help Me Information (LSU, 2021).
