Jack Stewart: El Greco’s Barmaid

In small town life, lovers are grist
for any gossip’s mill, even when the barmaid
stays at home, thinking about the cool grass
by the river, watching the moon pass
thinner and thinner, until the heart’s made
love into a diet of Christ

and perfect shadows, perfect kisses.
Where the water is brushed out long and black
in its own mirror, and the sun
brightens her bedclothes empty as sin,
and she ties the ragged curtains back
only after she pins her hair and dresses.

Holy Family” detail of Madonna. “Holy Family” is a 1595 oil on canvas painting by El Greco, painted during his time in Toledo and now in the Hospital de Tavera in that city. The work is very similar to those painted by the same artist during his stay in Rome. The artist frequently returned to the theme of the Holy Family with the depiction of the Madonna remaining similar through the series, but the model is unknown.

Gorgeous poem, unabashed lyric music unlike the too clever. too self satisfied poems I too frequently read as of late.
