Stand at the edge of the sea and wonder
at arcs of gulls over fields of spangles,
at sandpipers pecking the water’s release
of stored radiance pluming the air. What’s behind,
leave behind, like the boardwalk pulsing
with teenagers and parents, skaters, joggers,
and bikers, all threading each other’s lives
without once tripping over their anonymity,
these strangers random as bits of sea glass
collected and admired, these artifacts that wear,
in their polish, something of the depths that surge
below surface and in the dark, until they toss up
at our feet the discards of a different day
in the shape of these shards of light.
