Video: A Sense of Scale

The director says of this short film: “A SENSE OF SCALE is a reminiscence to the famous “Sense of Scale” documentary by Berton Pierce from 2011. Like the documentary, my experimental short film is all about details and the beauty of practical effects. I want to emphasize the meaning of handmade visuals and the effort it takes to stage sceneries on a small scale. I captured very tiny areas of paint flowing on a piece of paper while zooming in the closest possible with a custom lens setup. All shots are taken with my RED DSMC2 in 8K and several macro lenses. It took me around 1 year to finish this piece.”

Director: Roman de Giuli

Running time: 6 minutes

Roman De Giuli is an experimental filmmaker and fluid artist from Germany. His compositions consist of fluids, powders and colors which are applied on paper to create vivid, three dimensional scenes. He captures fluids in motion in 8K with a cinema camera and a macro lens in enormous reproduction scales. Roman does extensive studies of organic patterns, their behavior and movement. With the help of music and sound design, he transforms the abstract narrative potential of his hand made landscapes to experimental montages with a cinematic character. Roman De Giuli runs the Terracollage Visual Arts Studio and provides content for brands and agencies around the world.

Yes, I love these flowing colors and shapes. The video is like an animated Jackson Pollack painting!
