Jason Irwin: Afterwards

One a.m., the two of us holding hands, naked

in bed, in a second-floor room in Galway.

The tea-colored light from a streetlamp

seeping through the accordion blinds, tattooing the walls,

& from the open window—the sounds of passers-by,

traffic on the rain-soaked pavement, & a gull’s insistent,

almost jubilant cry.

Very imagistic, visual and auditory, silence against sounds.
