Video: Cast Out with Love

The Poetic Reconstruction of a Cornish Gansey, from Sheep to Sea.

The traditional Cornish Gansey is a uniform for fishermen and sailors dating back to the 18th Century. They are a link between our heritage industries, a feat of engineering, constructed mainly by women. It is a complex piece with considered features, technical for the time, made to keep our men and now women safe and warm during their long days at sea.

This project documents the reconstruction of a Gansey. From sheep to sea; shearing, processing, dying, knitting and fishing, in an attempt to bring awareness to the work that goes into these revered pieces. Elevating transparency in supply chains, unveiling the hidden figures, the craftsmanship, shifting gender roles, the romance, heart and soul that runs through each and every jumper.

It was a collaboration between so many, friends old and new, each contributing something incredibly special to the project. Thank you all:

The poetry of the voice-over coupled with the poetry of the images perfectly.

I agree, John. A lovely balance of poetry, nature, history, craft and tradition… I love this short film.

Really enjoyed this short video, which reminds me of my mother’s knitting in old days and urges me to write a poem.

Yes, I’ve known many knitters including my wife, and the craft fascinates me.

Having been a knitter, a commercial fisherman, and a poet, I loved seeing all three put together into one beautiful film. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, Michael, but you have done much more for others than I ever have. On the other hand, I once knitted a sweater while working on a boat off the west coast of Alaska.

Great video, thanks for posting. Unfortunately, it made me want to buy one (for which one probably has to take out a bank loan, LOL).
