Elizabeth Romero: Album

Here I am in 1946.

I was one.

Fat and confident in a little chair

In the back yard.

And here in 1959

In my first high heels, shy

With my bad stutter.

Me again in 1964 after my first son

Is born.

I’d just gotten out of a mental hospital.

Post-partum blues they said.

They didn’t know much then.

Here are my two sons in 1968

In their father’s arms.

He looks harmless.

They look doubtful and uneasy.

This, is my beautiful daughter

Holding a kitten.

It’s 1985 already.

This one is Jess and Mada

A couple of years ago

Still for a moment

Together in their love.

Facing a future

That hurtles toward us

In these quiet moments.

And here is my cat Charley

Who was hit by a car in 1999

And here a long-gone garden

With its birdbath full of leaves.
