Mary Jane White: Why, Friend, With Surprise and Awe
you have made me tender to the world
again, tender to twigs,
and to the fire just leaping
on the grate, tender to friends again,
and to people, all, sad or able,
who formerly made me impatient
and hard. I weep easily and often
now for the world. I leak. I leak
like the broken stem of a plant. Daily,
you break more of me, good
gardener, pruning. And you do this
with no hope, and then with a little hope.
