Naomi Shihab Nye: Trees Gossip with the Birds

        (Gossip Café, Dubai)

No one gets hurt          it’s gentle gossip

Which way the wind is blowing

How warm or cooling the sea

If we had tree ears   bird voices    we could join in

I’m listening right before I wake up

Listening when I go to sleep

Human thoughts bounce hard inside the brain

      Palestinian pain       Syrian catastrophe

                so much opulence here

But tree   bird   gossip          floats sweetly

When the orange sun sinks over the AZIZI sign I feel

the darkening world soaking up all the extra noise

hope of the sky deeper inside mine

Just a delightful poem. Do you have a poet divining rod, Michael, made form the wood of gossiping trees? Because you sure have a knack for finding them.

I’ve been an editor and publisher for a long time, Matthew. Naomi is not only one of the best poets in the country, but she is also the kindest person I’ve ever known. It’s a pleasure publishing her poems.
