Peter Schireson: Awakening

The monk sits

upright, unmoving

in the garden,

when a ripe apricot

falls from the tree—

Plotz! Suddenly,

he wants to be

among people,

go to a party.

Peter Schirerson lives in Palo Alto, California. Originally from Los Angeles, he went to school at Cal Berkeley, University of Victoria, and Harvard University. He has studied Zen Buddhism in the U.S and Japan and is a priest and Dharma lineage holder in the Suzuki Roshi Soto Zen lineage. He is the author of The Welter of Me and You published by Autumn House Press.

Lovely poem — it made me thing this —

    Evensong

an old Catholic prays The Angelus
his favorite rosary broke this morning

a Holy Card drops from his missal
it’s now that he knows this truth

that he needs to run and just run and
    God damn everything he passes
