Christine Rhein: Dear Child

from letters written in Texas by detained, immigrant mothers
to their sons and daughters (Los Angeles Times, July 10, 2018)

I write you these words.

I miss you so much, my love.

We will be together soon.

I am fighting for you.

I miss you so much, my love,

my precious little one.

I am fighting for you.

We’ll never be separated again.

My precious little one,

I want to see you and hold you.

We’ll never be separated again.

I only count the days.

I want to see you and hold you.

I’ll make you your meals.

I only count the days.

I will spoil you like always.

I’ll make you your meals.

We’ll go out walking.

I will spoil you like always.

I’m asking God every day.

We’ll go out walking.

I am going to protect you.

I’m asking God every day.

I’ll lay with you until you fall asleep.

I am going to protect you.

I don’t want you to be sad.

I’ll lay with you until you fall asleep.

I send you many kisses and hugs.

I don’t want you to be sad.

We will be together soon.

I send you many kisses and hugs.

I write you these words.

This is a brilliant, brave and tragic poem.

    Thank you, Christine.
