Joshua Dubois: What the President secretly did at Sandy Hook Elementary School
Below is an excerpt from The President’s Devotional by Joshua Dubois, the former head of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He’s recounting events that occurred Sunday, December 16, 2012 — two days after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. Dubois had gotten word the day before that the President wanted to meet with the families of the victims:
I left early to help the advance team—the hardworking folks who handle logistics for every event—set things up, and I arrived at the local high school where the meetings and memorial service would take place. We prepared seven or eight classrooms for the families of the slain children and teachers, two or three families to a classroom, placing water and tissues and snacks in each one. Honestly, we didn’t know how to prepare; it was the best we could think of.
The families came in and gathered together, room by room. Many struggled to offer a weak smile when we whispered, “The president will be here soon.” A few were visibly angry—so understandable that it barely needs to be said—and were looking for someone, anyone, to blame. Mostly they sat in silence.
I went downstairs to greet President Obama when he arrived, and I provided an overview of the situation. “Two families per classroom . . . The first is . . . and their child was . . . The second is . . . and their child was . . . We’ll tell you the rest as you go.”
The president took a deep breath and steeled himself, and went into the first classroom. And what happened next I’ll never forget.
Person after person received an engulfing hug from our commander in chief. He’d say, “Tell me about your son. . . . Tell me about your daughter,” and then hold pictures of the lost beloved as their parents described favorite foods, television shows, and the sound of their laughter. For the younger siblings of those who had passed away—many of them two, three, or four years old, too young to understand it all—the president would grab them and toss them, laughing, up into the air, and then hand them a box of White House M&M’s, which were always kept close at hand. In each room, I saw his eyes water, but he did not break.
And then the entire scene would repeat—for hours. Over and over and over again, through well over a hundred relatives of the fallen, each one equally broken, wrecked by the loss. After each classroom, we would go back into those fluorescent hallways and walk through the names of the coming families, and then the president would dive back in, like a soldier returning to a tour of duty in a worthy but wearing war. We spent what felt like a lifetime in those classrooms, and every single person received the same tender treatment. The same hugs. The same looks, directly in their eyes. The same sincere offer of support and prayer.
The staff did the preparation work, but the comfort and healing were all on President Obama. I remember worrying about the toll it was taking on him. And of course, even a president’s comfort was woefully inadequate for these families in the face of this particularly unspeakable loss. But it became some small measure of love, on a weekend when evil reigned.

While I didn’t always agree with Obama’s policies, I respected that he is a good person. And what he did here in my hometown was straight from the heart as both a parent and someone who deeply loves his family. Many of us waited hours to hear him speak because he was comforting those that lost so much. Secret Service brought him in and out through the auto tech area in the HS basement. My son was a junior at the time and Obama left a lovely message on the chalk board in that class. No press mention, no “look what I did”, just a heartfelt sentiment to the older kids who might have lost a sibling or parent. My son was smart enough to take a photo of it. We continue to Choose Love!

I will always be happy that I was alive when President Obama was our Commander and Chief. I didn’t agree with him all the time but he wasn’t insane. trump is a scab that keeps coming back but more infected each time you happen to pick it. WE NEED HIM OUT !!!!

I feel grateful that President Obama is such a genuinely caring man. Investing that time and attention to each of the impacted families.
I know it did not fix the impacts of the shootings, but it surely demonstrated an understanding that caring means a lot and power does not require weapons or insults.
Over the last couple of years during the endless campaign through today, many have lost sight of that.

I love this man with all my might. These are the things a leader does. He finds the wounded and gives his heart, his compassion and for a moment makes a nation believe we will carry on if not for us, for the fallen. God Bless you President Obama.

This is the President of the United States of America. I am so proud to have voted twice for this wonderful person. Thank you Oresident Obama, for inspiring a nation one act at a time. Thank you for your service, your calm, humor and your honesty.
I am saddened and mortified to call myself an American in the constant flooding wake of this current administration in 2017. Every day I consider how I might move to another country and live there as an ex-patriot for the rest of my life. Fod the first few months, people said, “It’s only four years”, but I worry that our democracy and our people will not survive it. Trump could never have done what President Obama did at Sandyhook, he doesn’t have compassion, intelligence or even common sense. Thank you again Mr. President, for 8 years of service and for your example of kindness and tolerance even to the opposition you faced constantly in Congress.

Half the things Obama did he did WITHOUT the press present. No one knew till AFTER he left office that he went to Walter Reed Hospital at least once a month to talk with soldiers recovering there. There were also times when he went to meet the coffins of soldiers at Dover where he did not take the Press or release a Press detail on it. At the heart of socialism is the idea of collective ownership and group cooperative (stepping toward communism) whereas fascism is a system in which one group takes control of social order, dictating the lives of others. They are alike only in that the group takes precedence over the individual; their concepts of groups are wildly different. Punahou is a private school, expensive to be sure, but not the most. Punahou offers scholarships as well. This is irrelevant though. President Obama is a good man, a gentleman, and a leader I was proud to have as Commander in Chief. He certainly is missed. His empathy was/is real. NIC is entitled to his opinion, President Obama would be the first to defend his right to speak. We have the ability to discard his hateful comments.

God gave President Obama the strength to give comfort and support to those families that day. It must have been emotionally draining but he understood how important and necessary it was.

He is a father and he could see his own worst fear painfully written on each family member’s face. Imagine if we had to console these parents. What would we say? It is admirable that he gave each family his heartfelt condolences.

President Obama is a genuine caring and loving person. He has empathy and is a kind and sincere person with Morales. This type of character cannot be taught or learned. It is inherent. The individual who is president now has none of these qualities, which is sad. So terribly sad. This individual is noy my president and never will be. President Obama you are sadly missed. Maybe one day I will have the pleasure of meeting you and I will tell you this myself. Until then I will continue to pray for our country.

President Obama was “bashed” by Trump mercilessly over the bogus “Birth Certificate” claim. Did you come forward at that time and ask “Why the bashing?”. The fact remains, these two Presidents are vastly different, and the article clearly illustrates that, as does nearly everything each says and does. Trump has invited “bashing” since he appeared on the scene. Obama has inspired respect since he did.

Very few of our past Presidents could have done this with such Love and Compassion. The diary is well written and makes me sob to think of “yes, the toll it must have taken on him,” Many others would have given a generic speech or sope in generalities. There will never be another like President Obama who really felt the pain of others in their sorrow.

This is one form of leadership. Others that he was good at were class and integrity – at least compared to his contemporaries. As far as being an awful leader – compared to our current one? Who knows nothing about our legislative process, is unwilling to learn about any policy issues (see health care), gets his intelligence briefings from CNN and Fox and Friends, and has managed to drag America’s name down to the gutter where the rest of the world is concerned with his inane bluster and childishness? Yes, I will take a leader who can speak eloquently, can understand issues, can treat people with dignity and respect regardless of their color, race, gender, religion, etc.

Nic is obviously wrong in his assessment of President Obama. If the president had had an agenda, what he did that day would have been deliberately leaked to the media. Since this is the first time most of us have been told this story, and it was basically a very private event, the “anti-gun agenda” he mentions is just an out and out fabrication. The only reason we can’t get good gun controls is that the NRA lobbies Congress with obscene amounts of money to buy their votes. Polls after polls after polls indicate that voters are overwhelmingly for strict gun-controls.

Obamacare was harmful compared to what? To 22 million without coverage? To the fact that we spend about double what other countries spend on healthcare and get far worse outcomes AND are the only rich country where people go bankrupt because of healthcare costs? The Affordable Care Act was not what President Obama wanted, but it was a start in the right direction. It required insurance companies to limit spending on overhead to 20% of premiums – leaving 80% for healthcare. The reality is that medicare is the most cost-effective healthcare system in this country because it works on the single payer model and rations healthcare. Prior to the Affordable Care Act we simply rationed healthcare based on whether you could pay for it, not whether it made sense. Now even poor people have a chance. So, fix the problems rather than whine which is all the Republicans have done for the past 6-7 years because they have no legitimate ideas of their own.

Glad you don’t have anything to do with MY health care. My experiences with the ACA, it’s proper name, have been very good. No one I know, and that’s a LOT of elementary age students (I was a teacher until recently) and their parents, other professional (working AND retired) and my parent’s contemporaries, who are also quite happy with their care experiences under the ACA.

It’d take several essays to explain but in a nutshell I despise and kinds of special treatment EVEN if the intentions were/are good. I’m bi-racial and there are programs, scholarships, grants, etc. available to me which wouldn’t be there if I was only white. The same would apply if I was a woman, I’d be eligible for certain preferential programs.
Racism is wrong. Sexism is wrong. It’s wrong when people are treated differently because of their skin color or their gender. Period. Affirmative action, while well-intentioned, offers special treatment which is a form of revenge or reverse racism and sexism. Discrimination sponsored by the government if you will. I know most of you won’t agree with me but that’s ok. I’m used to liberals telling me how persecuted my ancestors were and therefore how entitled I should feel to this revenge form of racism. Nope, thank you, not for me.

Such a shame that these families may read such filthy rhetoric about someone who went to see them during the worst time in their life, the loss of the child and familis who lost their loved ones. A President who took the time to comfort them and feel their pain along with them. May those beautiful babies rest in the hands of God. Those teachers have a special place in heaven for trying to protect them. I won’t belittle anyone here who cannot see a story for what it is, a look at a kind man who did the best he could for our country. Whether you agree with him or not, he did not deserve the hate he got from people. These families do not deserve the hateful comments. Let us all pray to the good Lord that none of you have to go through what these families have gone through and then have to deal with such hate on a kind story written by someone who was there.

This is a reminder of what a wonderful President of the United States that we had in Barack Obama. He is such a considerate and caring person. I very much mourn and miss his presence as our President! These poor people who lost a child to violence by a psychiatrically disturbed person with many guns that NEVER should have been allowed to be purchased, were at lease consoled by President Barack Obama! May the USA one day have a president with such class, education and experience again. It is such a shame that people have been convinced to vote for a president with no qualifications for the job of President of the United States! I wish these parents fond memories of their lost children and hope that America one day realizes that we do NOT need guns to be safe!

As I recall, Obama was not qualified to be president when he took office. After all, he was only a new senator on the floor when he began his campaign. Also, one story does not tell that he was “such a considerate and caring person”. Tell that to the families of the Benghazi fiasco. He didn’t even attend their funerals and they were in service of the United States!
And let’s move on to the gun issue. Adam didn’t purchase those guns … his mother (or father, I forget) did. A psychotic (phychiatrically disturbed) person does not have to purchase a gun to be a psychotic, and the gun didn’t make him psychotic. What he chose to do with the gun is a horrible, unimaginable tragedy, and I can’t even fathom what those families went through. But … look at Chicago, where the gun laws are so strict (and Obama was the senator for Illinois) … the crime rate is unbelievable. The bad guys still get guns but the good guys don’t have any to protect themselves with, hence, the bad guys are winning. Who’s fault is that? Who can we blame for that? Let’s look at New York City. Go look at their gun laws and then their crime statistics. They will speak for themselves … just like Chicago. Me? I like my guns and I like my CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. You know, that thing that your considerate and caring president wanted to take away from millions of people.
Trump may not be ‘qualified’ in your eyes, but considering the alternative … well, we are a lot better off with Trump. He isn’t perfect by any means. He is human, after all, and of course, he doesn’t follow what the puppet masters tell him to say. I don’t like everything he says, but I’ll tell you something. His sometimes ridiculous remarks only make me see him as human. He’s not a puppet. He doesn’t depend on his teleprompter. He says the same things that so many other people say. The only difference is that he has millions of eyes on him and critiquing every word that comes out of his mouth, or off of his keyboard, and in today’s digital world, the really ridiculous stuff spreads like wild fire.
I will agree to disagree with you about Obama. I certainly don’t see him as the considerate person you see him as. And I don’t see Trump as the complete failure (before he has even really gotten started) that you apparently do. That is the beauty of this great Nation. We have freedom.

If you think Obama was inconsiderate about the Benghazi incident where our diplomats were killed, you are seriously flawed as a human being. He was angry and saddened and he did contact those families to express his condolences. Shame on you for turning this story of the compassion of a president to families in mourning of their losses of their babies who were simply going to school, not serving in a seriously risky place as adults knowing those risks in the state dept. I knew the Ambassador Chris Stevens and his family were contacted by the President and they were consoled by the president and SOS Clinton who was a close friend of his btw. Perhaps if the GOP congress had not denied the request by Clinton to increase security funding for embassies in risky posts, we would not even be talking about Benghazi!
