Joshua Dubois: What the President secretly did at Sandy Hook Elementary School

Below is an excerpt from The President’s Devotional by Joshua Dubois, the former head of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He’s recounting events that occurred Sunday, December 16, 2012 — two days after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. Dubois had gotten word the day before that the President wanted to meet with the families of the victims:

I left early to help the advance team—the hardworking folks who handle logistics for every event—set things up, and I arrived at the local high school where the meetings and memorial service would take place. We prepared seven or eight classrooms for the families of the slain children and teachers, two or three families to a classroom, placing water and tissues and snacks in each one. Honestly, we didn’t know how to prepare; it was the best we could think of.

The families came in and gathered together, room by room. Many struggled to offer a weak smile when we whispered, “The president will be here soon.” A few were visibly angry—so understandable that it barely needs to be said—and were looking for someone, anyone, to blame. Mostly they sat in silence.

I went downstairs to greet President Obama when he arrived, and I provided an overview of the situation. “Two families per classroom . . . The first is . . . and their child was . . . The second is . . . and their child was . . . We’ll tell you the rest as you go.”

The president took a deep breath and steeled himself, and went into the first classroom. And what happened next I’ll never forget.

Person after person received an engulfing hug from our commander in chief. He’d say, “Tell me about your son. . . . Tell me about your daughter,” and then hold pictures of the lost beloved as their parents described favorite foods, television shows, and the sound of their laughter. For the younger siblings of those who had passed away—many of them two, three, or four years old, too young to understand it all—the president would grab them and toss them, laughing, up into the air, and then hand them a box of White House M&M’s, which were always kept close at hand. In each room, I saw his eyes water, but he did not break.

And then the entire scene would repeat—for hours. Over and over and over again, through well over a hundred relatives of the fallen, each one equally broken, wrecked by the loss. After each classroom, we would go back into those fluorescent hallways and walk through the names of the coming families, and then the president would dive back in, like a soldier returning to a tour of duty in a worthy but wearing war. We spent what felt like a lifetime in those classrooms, and every single person received the same tender treatment. The same hugs. The same looks, directly in their eyes. The same sincere offer of support and prayer.

The staff did the preparation work, but the comfort and healing were all on President Obama. I remember worrying about the toll it was taking on him. And of course, even a president’s comfort was woefully inadequate for these families in the face of this particularly unspeakable loss. But it became some small measure of love, on a weekend when evil reigned.

Lori, your level of sheer ignorance invites only sympathy for your severe mental incapacity.
I was there when the old GOP fought Social Security, Workman’s Comp, Unemployment Insurance and have continued fighting every social program since 1932. I saw Truman integrate the armed services in the Jim Crow era for most of the nation. Ike provide federal handouts to his golfing buddies –Dixon-Yates, a private barge channel up the Delaware river for a USS Steel plant — and the biggest of all, handing the keys to the U.S. treasury to Charlie Wilson, ACTIVE Chairman of the General Motors Corporation — and Secretary of Defense. (Who dumped 500,000 worthless GMC hydromatic truck transmissions on the military.) Nixon with his felony convicted VP Spiro Agnew — and every senior staff member of the Nixon White House and the Attorney General serving prison time for various crimes. As as a Southern Republican when there were rarely more than a dozen of us per county, I went to meet prospective candidate Thomas Dewey in Kansas City. Our state’s delegation left with the unanimous evaluation that Dewey was crooked. Nearly 50 years later came the news Dewey was basically a pawn of one NYC mob family. DubYah totally devoted himself to destroying U.S. and Global economy with his Gut Feeling. Meanwhile, Dick Cheney directed close to $1-TRILLION to his personal piggy bank — with his huge Halliburton stock holdings returning dividends to Cheney and his family. (Who still vocalize at full throat with their greed.)

all this arguing omg …this is why we still ‘need’ goverments presidents and authority figures…we cannot be civil to each other and respect each other…a long road ahead to peace on earth and many do not want it being in love with the drama and their own opinions regardless of the pain and sorrow of others…the outer mirrors the inner world…so much cognitive dissonance …..

3 months after Sept 11 I drove to Ground Zero. 2 weeks after Sandy Brook, I went there. Rather different locations. I felt NY, thicker skinned. Both areas, I’ll just say were Ripped. I went to these places, for EACH soul, RIPPED from earth!!! And the Warriors who did the BEST, paying a price of their own. President Obama in my opinion SAVED America and the world. I respect that almost as many people fell the exact opposite. We are free.

Your racist hatred knows no bounds. As an original SOUTHERN REPUBLICAN, The President of the United States is MY President. True for FDR, True For Truman, True for Ike, True for Carter, True For Reagan, True For every president.
I admit personal embarrassment for the hidden corruption of the Ike years, for Thomas Dewey of NYC’s Gambino Family, for the Nixon White House and for George W. Bush, who carried this country into disaster. Wake up and look at facts. Barrack Obama lead this country and the world back from almost certain full economic depression. He had to get a war ravaged military out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Irag — because Bush signed a treaty with his puppet Iraqi governement that they could end U.S. military presence and they wanted us out. We had some soldiers who survived 14 deployments and our men and women suffered the highest percentage of amputations in history. We still have a few over there, some specialists fighting ISIS and support people in Afghanistan. Plus our aviators over Syrian and iraq. The entire region destabilized by Bush. This sitting president relies upon the knowledge, wisdom and experience of the military, diplomatic and economic specialists. Bush shot from the hip, strictly based upon his gut.

Check your facts John. Obama has taken the fewest number of off days compared to any President since Eisenhower. And not even 25% of the number of off days that GW Bush took. Heck in the middle of the Iraq War he took 35 straight days down at his ranch in Crawford. Can imagine the shrieking if Obama had taken 35 days in a row off in Hawaii?

Then we are taking the word of someone else about the ‘fact’ that they were working vacations for Bush and Reagan, unless one of us was there. Isn’t it then also possible that Obama takes working vacations as well? The whole ‘Vacationer-in-Chief’ thing was bogus back when Bush was in office and the same is true for Obama. The results are what matter. Bush was given a surplus, invaded the wrong country – creating Isil/Isil in the process. Sadly the list of Bush ‘accomplishments goes on and on..

DubYah spending hours daily at the ranch on his bicycle — Did he have his secretary on the handlebars? Reagan didn’t do the work when he was in the White House. The staff supplied by his billionaire buddies did the work, set the policy nd made sure Reagan was rested for public performances. Still love the legend that he never work makeup so he would look young. Having been there for three weeks of his gubernatorial race, Ronnie could concentrate upon his pinochle game while the makeup was applied. Of course he was glancing over his script for the next appearance. For instance, “he is a so called expert”, to describe someone who claims expertise but has no skills or training. The president is the president. You might not like him but he is the president. But you’re really not into facts, are you…?

These are the people who consider Donald Trump qualified for the White House — When his stated platform mirrors the original political platform for Hitler and the Nazi Party.

In time, people forget your name, your title, the awards you won, the goals you have achieved; great people make history, but history is forgotten in time. One thing people never forget is how you made them feel. If you can provide comfort to someone who is hurting, or m&ms to a child who doesn’t understand (whose parents will be relieved for the distraction of a simple bag of candy); if you can make them feel they have been heard, and seen, and loved, that is something they will never forget. You want to stop gun violence, start there. Don’t start with laws; laws have loopholes, and people who can’t find loopholes just break them anyway. Start with acceptance, kindness, compassion, and caring. That’s what will beat this “war” for us. Everyone feels something- you have to reach out and care what they feel- and as a result you may help shape it.

Your ignorance of political schools is near complete. Executive orders are directly opposite Anarchy and Socialism. When a Tea Party congress blocked 26 desperately needed VA hospitals 41 times — and cut all increases for VA services budgets to obstruct President Obama — Then you NeoCons blame Obama for your heroes’ misdeeds. Yes failing to appropriate adequate funds for the huge numbers of the Bush/Cheney created veterans was criminal– But it was purely a GOP crime. President Obama, with a Democratic Congress more than doubled VA funding during his first two years. Increased 50% annually through 1912-13, VA funding would have almost covered the need. With DubYah, steadily increasing gas prices. With Obama, steadily decreasing gas prices. This president has my respect not only for the day he spent with the families of the victims of Sandy Hook, but having dealt with those who consistently tear down. I can only imagine the decisions a man of character must make. And no, not all are going to be ones he wants to make, but has to.

When JFK was killed it was no longer tradition for a President to meet and greet with the COMMON PEOPLE. What brave men Obama and Biden are to get out of their secure confinement of the cars they rode in during the parade down Penn. Ave in Washington, D. C. Think about how that Coward acted that day walking the street and shaking hands of people who could kill the #1 and #2 men not just in the U. S. but the world. Yes that was a true act of a coward. G. W. Bush would have NEVER done that. That coward also often walks back to the W.H. from a local coffee shop or diner. People video him doing this because they are amazed to see the President on the street walking and greeting just plain ole common people. OMG what a coward he is and you are sooo strong and all you only call yourself (K) those are big balls you have.

He does not cause the strife. It’s people like you who can’t/won’t/refuse to accept the good man that he is. He is actually risking his life for this nation considering all the false targeting you and your kind are doing to him. The fact that he is succeeding in spite of you and your kind should tell you something.

You are missing the point. It’s not about who he is or isn’t. If he was able to provide any comfort to those affected by that horrific tragedy then he was a blessing thst day. Focus on those that lost their loved, remember them today, they are still in pain. I would have accepted comfort from any source available and been thankful for it and if you stop and think….so would you.

Thank you for writing this. Our poor president has been treated so horridly during his term and so undeservedly so. It’s nice to read a story like this amidst all the hatred and non-truths out there. This is the man I voted for, and I am proud. We will not see this kind of compassion in the next term, of that I’m certain.

OK, you have my attention. What measurements make him the worst president by far? Unemployment rate? No, that’s come way down. Stock market performance? No, the market has more than doubled. Combat deaths? No, that’s lower too. Budget deficit? No, that’s less than half what it was when he took office. Job creation? No, that’s way up from 2007 and 2008. Number of uninsured? No, that too is much lower. Gotta tell you, I am having trouble seeing what measurables you are using to justify your statement.

Obama’s unemployment rate is double digits. He has cooked the numbers since being in office. Under him they have dropped those underemployed and who stopped looking. So its not comparing apples to apples anymore. Hey look! Gasoline prices are ALMOST as low as what they were under Bush. ALMOST. More debt accumulated than ALL previous presidents!!!

Having lived through every year of FDR’s four-term presidency in a southern Republican home, and along with being politically active, along with publishing community newspapers in conservative rural communities — I find comments of people like “Dan” posted Dec. 14 to be so stupid and ignorant [Lacking in knowledge] as to deserve nothing but contempt. Makes me consider discarding the name I have borne proudly for 85 years. I will guarantee I have worked on more GOP state and national election campaigns for more elections than you will ever vote in. Barack Obama and Joe Biden saved this nation from total economic collapse and a depression far worse than the Hoover Depression which lasted from October, 1929 through 1941 for Urban America and through 1989 for the rural regions. During the Hoover depression nearly every U.S. citizen knew a relative with a farm where they could go for the warmer months, possibly live in a tent or a barn, or pallets on the floors — work in the fields, grow expanded gardens, help care for livestock– and have food. Today, less than 2% of U.S. citizens work and live on the land and their operations are highly mechanized, requiring lengthy training and experience to operate the equipment. Few have gardens. Except for being saved from an all-consuming DEPRESSION, 1931 to 1941 would have seemed the good old days.

Your problem is the same as for 99% of the racist bigots who will hate President Obama simply because he is deemed black. Bush lost 5-million private sector jobs in 2008. Obama’s time has seen more than 10-Million private sector jobs created, along with a serious reduction in the federal payroll and deficit. Bush exploded the deficit. Obama has reduced the deficit more than 80%, steadily cutting 10% annually. Bush totally failed with Katrina Relief — IN EVERY WAY! Bush left office with this nation’s and the global economy heading straight downhill in total collapse. TARP ONE had failed, because there were no restriction or requirements for using TARP ONE funds. [One bank’s executive committee voted themselves their bank’s entire $13-Million TARP bailout, then declared bankruptcy. And under TARP ONE it was legal. Stockholders and depositors were the losers. President Obama’s TARP TWO not only saved the Auto Industry, but squared away the banks, because controls were placed on use of the TARP TWO money. Bush — the Dow Jones was under 8,000. Obama — the Dow Jones has stabilized between 17,000 and 20,000. Obama has organized the entire Arab world to provide ground forces to defeat ISIS, with U.S. training cadre. This is not a Bush Lone Ranger operation, even though ISIS is born out of Bush’s disastrous invasion of Iraq. You have commented on almost every comment on this article attacking liberals and telling everyone your opinion, but this shows exactly why you are the person you are describing. You lack the humanity and the compassion to see what the purpose of this article is and instead will take any chance you get to attack a man based on your personal, ignorant opinion. This article is to show how the president, of the country you are apparently a patriot of, helped families who suffered a great deal of loss. Regardless of your antiquated beliefs, these families deserved compassion, and the fact that the man you so vehemently attack gave it to them while you are unwilling to even acknowledge the true purpose of this article shows that you are inhuman. I do not care about your political beliefs, before you go calling me some worthless liberal, but it is so infuriating to see that you have so much hatred for a man you know very little about that you cannot show even a sliver of compassion for the families. Stop commenting. Stop hurting people because you are unhappy with something completely unrelated. Just stop treating people terribly because you are unable to look past your own personal gain.

Never ceases to amaze me just how fast the Anti-Obamaists show up to *any* article about *any* good thing he did. It’s like they are terrified to admit he’s a decent person.
I mean, look at this- it is an article about a human being individually providing support and comfort to other human beings who’ve just gone through a horrible tragedy. If it was *any other* person, the comments section would be full of praise for compassion and caring.
But because it’s *Obama*, the comments are full of rageful vitriol and namecalling, all ranting impotently about the ‘worst president ever’.
It is really very sad. They are so attached to their hate and anger and bitterness, that they have to be angry about it on a story about being nice to people who’s children were gunned down by a madman.

No matter what you feel about our commander in chiefs policies, this behavior by the trolls is a new low.

Then someone calling themselves Southern Patriot jumping all over the hate word. I’m curious SP, do you actually own a passport since you seem to think you know what the world thinks. I travel the globe for work and people in all countries I go to actually love our president and talk about how lucky we are compared to the Bush years and how thankful they are we elected him. Canada, South America, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Japan… I’ve heard it everywhere. I feel sorry for you SP that you are so filled with ignorance, hate and blindness that you cannot see how lucky you are that our country has had such a great president that the American dollar is the strongest than its been in the last 15 years and we have thousands of new jobs each month. Its a great time to have a passport and travel since our dollar is so strong…you should try it some day.

When you come out of your coma, take a long, hard look around at the damage this cretin has created in seven years. The health care debacle, the lies about his administration and their involvement in any number of scandals, the national debt, the number of people on food stamps at an all time high, the highest rate of poverty in 50 years. an ACTUAL unemployment rate of close to 10%. I don’t know where you get your information, but Obama has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as the best president on economics ever, he has been awarded 2 Nobel Prizes, and is generally recognized by world leaders as a great president. The health care “debacle” has insured that half a million people in my state alone now have access to health care. There have been no scandals, even the republicans admit that the Benghazi event was not a scandal, but a way to try to take H. Clinton down. You are a victim of brainwashing by right wing media. Obama has flaws; he has allowed the NSA to spy on America. But so has every other president we have had. Who wants to break the trend of trying to keep us safe? Certainly, you are the blind one here. Try some objective news, as you are too far from center to be rational.

Upturn from Bush? Are you completely insane or suffering from dementia? When the last Bush was in the White House, even though he had a Republican House and Senate for 6 of his 8 years, he still managed to leave office with the nation facing:

“Any upturn is a lag effect from Bush. ” This actually made me laugh out loud. I did not know this was a thing – to credit anything good to a “lag effect from Bush”. This sort of vitriolic anti-Obama nonsense pervades the right wing blogosphere. Most of it is based in a deeply rooted racism, and is fueled by the constant drivel on Fox news. I could cite numbers to you, but numbers, indeed reality itself, means little to your sort. Wow.

It took a long time to ban guns in the UK and the mass shootings stopped immediately. There are still terrorist attacks, but that is a different problem. Gun control is an obvious and immediately effective solution to America’s sickness. All of those young people who are killed in the student shootings. It is so dreadfully sad and the gun lobby seems to think it is not their fault. As for voting for Trump – you are fucking insane! It is like voting for Hitler. You might be better moving to North Korea where government by the insane is the normal way.

That’s actually false – the UK has had four mass shootings in the 20th and 21st centuries, one of which occurred *after* the ban was put in place. They have never a problem here, the system we had, of strict controls and restrictions worked well – 3 shootings in 3 decades is a good track record.

The ban was sold to us as a solution to a problem (that didn’t exist) and it has failed utterly in its intended purpose. The system we had before worked well and needs to be reintroduced, the failed ban lifted.

No. Gun control was better than what you have in the US, but still allowed mass shootings with hand guns. Assault rifles have always been banned in the UK. When Dunblane happened there was a total ban on hand guns, but farmers, some hunting clubs and pest controllers could keep rifles and shotguns. There was a shotgun massacre a few years back and shotgun controls have also been tightened. Nothing since except a few criminals and the odd gang killing, but if they want to kill each other that’s fine with me.

False – the UK gun ban has been a failure. It is proof that total bans do not work. First, you need to know this – the UK has never had a serious problem with mass shootings (and gun crime in general). We have had 4 mass shootings in almost 5 decades. One of these took place after the ban came into effect.

From this we see two obvious things – one, that the ban did not stop the mass shooting in Cumbria. It has therefore failed in its stated purpose. Two, 3 mass shootings in 3 decades shows that the system we had worked well. Guns were strictly regulated – by law, anyone with firearms had to keep them in a secure gun safe. All guns were registered to the owner. A license required.

The system worked well, but not perfectly. All the ban has done is punish innocent people and not prevented the thing it was supposed to stop.

So please, don’t cite us as we example when you don’t understand the situation here.

Carl, you stated, “We have had 4 mass shootings in almost 5 decades. One of these took place after the ban came into effect.”

So, statistically 3/4 of the mass shootings (75%) occurred before the ban and 1/4 (25%) occurred after. That would be a reduction in mass shootings of 50%. How exactly is that unsuccessful?

Carl, you say that 3 mass shootings in 30 years shows the one system worked, but the one mass shooting since the total ban went into effect is proof of failure? Please remember the context of this thread. In the US, we have expanded gun rights massively and have many mass shootings. We’re not talking about the damage a shotgun or a handgun can do, but assault weapons that are designed to kill a lot of people and are so prolific in the US these days.

You just can’t see the nonsense in your argument, can you? The WHOLE POINT is that it is almost impossible to get hold of a gun over here because of gun laws. THAT means that impulse killings like your continual school shootings don’t happen because people come to their senses. If a gun is immediately available then impulse killings are much more likely. If you can’t see the logic in that then there really is no hope for you.

Did you write your Congressional reps urging them to support such legislation? Of course, if they were Republicans, they were more interested in pleasing the NRA than they were in doing the right thing.

Where do you get your statistics? From a MSNBC poll? NRA is the tip of the iceberg of 2nd A organizations. Every state in the republic has at least one and several have more than one. Another National group is NAGR. There are several National groups besides the NRA.

So your answer to this would be put more drunks on the road? Because more guns means less violence right? Same for car accidents then…let’s put more cars on the road so we’ll have less wrecks. Perfect sense to me!

If enforcing laws that are there already needs to be looked at, I can agree. But there’s nothing here on the books for assault rifle laws to argue about the enforcing them or not right?

It did happen and is an ever present event in the lives of those that had a loss that day. A void that they will have to live with the rest of their lives. You should think before you say it never happened you are saying that person’s loved one never existed, very harsh words. I did have a loss in this tragedy. Love wins.

I’m not a fan of our president, but I’m not going to slander the man or believe incredible conspiracy stories just because I don’t agree with him. If he needs a reason to push gun control; there had already been plenty of mass shootings and unfortunately there have been plenty since then. By the way, I am a gun owner.

He must be a very frustrated man, unable to get the gun laws improved and his compassion throws Trump into stark relief. 300 shootings and not a word for gun laws from Trump, then two Muslims attack and Trump wants to ban them from entering the US, tag all the Muslims who already live there and put many of them in concentration camps. It really does show the difference between the two men.

Yes guns have been taken away… Because of this jump on the gun bandwagon..Govs of both NY and Ct. went after legal gun owners..In NY Como passed the NY SAFE act that made thousands if not hundreds of thousands of legal gun owners criminals over night.. Said we can no longer own firearms that held more then 7 shots..Most modern firearms do.. You can’t sell them in state or hand them down from father to son.. In NYC. The Police first sent letter to those who had permits and registered their guns… The Police said they must surrender them..That is confiscation..oh yea because they were registered they knew who had them… Just like the Nazis did right before WWII.. I had friends that had expensive firearms taken with no recourse.. So screw you when you say no guns are taken away.. Ban demented people!!! And some of those that are demented are those that follow religion way too much.. Christians that go after abortion clinics to Muslims that are good Muslims that follow Mohammad state anyone that is not Muslim aren’t considered human.. If you don’t convert to Islamism you are to be killed or enslaved… Trump for President 2016, Clinton for Prison 2016.. Bernie Sanders what a Joke..plus one foot on a banana peel one in the grave..

Too bad,Hitler lost huh, then he could have helped Trump directly instead of just leaving him his ideas. Why not just kill all Muslims, there are more than a few religious and GOP/Tea Party leaders that want that. Please tell me how Trump plans to deport an estimated 11 million people. Even if we had the planes and ship to put them all on where do you dump them? No country is gonna let them land or dock to dump them? So what just dump them at sea? March them to the Mexican or Canadian border at gun point and if they do not cross, open fire? Or maybe just build several thousand new prisons? Hey that works, then he could say he created tens of thousands of jobs as prison guards, Tell me how is he going to do it. He has no clue. He is hated by half the free world an pretty much all the Muslim world, wouldn’t it be nice maybe he could start a world war and nuke everyone he hates, of course the radioactive ruin that was left would kill almost everyone else as well. Trump is a loudmouth braggart who opens his mouth and lets fly with zero regard for what he says. 90% of what he says he could never do, no one could. All he will ever do is make huge promises , ruin tens of millions of lives and turn America into a fascist state that Hitler and Mussolini would be proud of.

Too easy to slip back over.. There are sharks off the shores of Africa..That should keep people at bay.. They could start a new life..Most came from mud huts send them back to mud huts..
