Doug Anderson: On the consequence of a failure of imagination
Much of the good work in the world is poorly paid or done for free.
Poetry would not be written, hospital and hospice sits would not be done, medical care would not be given to the poor, animals would not be rescued, great music would not get written and played, great art made, if the people who did these things did not love to do them above and beyond the profit motive.
Many of the integuments that hold cultures together would vanish if these things were not done.
And yet the GOP and its brother tyrants around the world are trying to make this work more and more difficult to do and are cutting what meager funding there is to support these enterprises.
Because they have atrophied imaginations, the GOP cannot see that there are forces outside the world of the bottom line that are as necessary as water.

Amen! To be fair, no doubt, we have to acknowledge that similar attitudes exist among many (corporate minded) members the Democratic Party, who may sometimes cloak their indifference to these vital expressions of humanity under insincere rhetoric for the sake of political expediency. But the GOP seems completely hellbent on carrying out the corporate agenda, even in defiance of many traditional conservative values.
