Doug Anderson: Dear Children

Dear children: poetry is smutty and subversive. You should read it under your blanket at night with a flashlight. It is better than peyote. It will enable you to see things you didn’t hitherto know were there. Your parents will get nervous about it. You will say things like “the moon is an Alka-Seltzer fizzing in daddy’s glass the morning after.” They’ll ground you, but all you’ve got to do is open a book like a door and descend the winding staircase down to the underground river and watch the reflection of the water wavering on the walls…

Isn’t Doug great? He can record a profound experience in just a few sentences.
