Meg Pokrass: Like she is

he is a wounded deer, she thinks at first

he is disabled and might fall from an Autumn

wind hair black & white eyes iceberg

blue in dim light one foot planted

on the other side this is why she tells

him her most embarrassing

secrets one night he doesn’t like

this Earth so much that he might live

here and be ruined like she is he

says & this makes her want to take

him home & feed him everything

she has left in her cupboards

whatever it is she has learned

to cook even a little bit well

Meg Pokrass’ new collection, The First Law of Holes: New and Selected is forthcoming from Dzanc Books. She lives in Inverness, Scotland.
