Majid Naficy: A Little Girl’s Rebellion

At seven o’clock in the morning
As I pass by a green house
An automatic sprinkler
Suddenly goes off
And wets me head to toe.

I do not run from it
But let the drops of water
Speak to me
Of a hot summer afternoon
When my two brothers and I
Went to the swimming pool
And my sister who was not allowed
To swim with us
Turned on the fountain
To take us by surprise.

The playful sprinkler
Has a hidden sorrow
And speaks of a little girl’s rebellion.
