John Samuel Tieman: Great Again

The death of the empire wasn’t difficult

to record. The 6 o’clock news ended

with the usual uplifting bit, a disabled

veteran got a medal. A man then turned

on a rerun and decided how he’d vote

during a patriotic lawn care commercial.

The 10 o’clock news explained the border.

Mexicans would stay in Mexico. America

could relax. There was no need to learn

Spanish or even much English, they said.

The news ended with the usual uplifting

segment, a 5thgrader’s spelling bee ribbon.

The death of the empire wasn’t difficult

to record. A man turned on a late night

rerun and considered how he’d vote

during a patriotic siding commercial.

The death of the empire wasn’t difficult.
