David Huddle: Animal Videos as Last-Resort Religious Practice of the Ruined Nation

When politics became so deceitful

and hateful that even the idiot

president himself could see the country

collapsing into chaos, we citizens

.
found the old comforts–food, music, booze, drugs,

sex, and our churches–helped only a little

and though suicide rates shot up, most of us

lacked the nerve and/or the means to blow out

.
our own candles, so we turned to the videos–

an owl befriending an orphaned llama,

a baby elephant chasing geese, the Japanese man

taking his giant tortoise for a walk. We knew

.
they weren’t going to save us, but they were

all we could find that made us feel better.

I love this poem, David. I too have found myself, oh dear, watching a cat video or two that came by way of fb and forgetting our world for a moment while I congratulated myself on being a Dog Person. It’s all true, and too true.
