John Samuel Tieman: Tell Me

I thought there was a lesson in the river

when the current is frozen we do know

the ice just waits

I want to know what you know about age

if the years answer anything

more than the ice that thins in the spring

I want to know how long the river takes

to shape the shore where no one lives

I want to know the ice before I die

to know the shore and all that is

hidden in its reeds

tell me if you know these things

tell me about life or a fathom of ice

a story about the reeds or just the shore
