In what many observers have praised as the best speech of the 2016 Democratic Convention, Reverend William Barber, head of North Carolina’s NAACP, asks us to embrace “a moral revolution of values” and continue fighting for progressive causes. Barber urges his audience to take action to stop gun violence and police brutality, to support voting rights and Black Lives Matter, to make universal health care and a $15 minimum wage a reality for all. “Some issues are not left versus right or liberal versus conservative – they are right versus wrong,” he said. Pointedly citing Jesus, “a brown-skinned Palestinian Jew,” Barber proclaimed, “We must shock this nation with the power of love. We must shock this nation with the power of mercy. We must shock this nation and fight for justice for all. We can’t give up on the heart of our democracy. Not now, not ever.”
