Just when you think that American political discourse could sink no lower, a former bikini model who would be First Lady takes the national stage and delivers a plagiarized speech. Should we laugh at the Republican Party (a.k.a. “The Party of Stupid”), or should we cry for what America has become?

As the story was breaking, a Trump campaign spokesman offered a less than helpful explanation: “What she did was use words that are common words… Melania’s team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking.”

Then three days after the speech, Meredith Melver, a staff writer at the Trump organization, took responsibility for the plagiarism and offered an explanation. As often happens when a scandal breaks, the explanation raises more questions than it answers.

As for Mrs Trump… she has been conspicuously absent from the campaign since the plagiarism was revealed — although she has released a statement saying that she admires the Obamas’ “family values.”

Hmmm.. curiouser and curiouser…
