John Samuel Tieman: Poem

October and the days
grow slowly shorter
the leaves drop and you
light a fire in silence
there’s a rumor
the power will fail
every now and then
so you crack the window
a bit just at sunset
and prepare for an unending
evening in which you let
the fire finally burn
down and contemplate
the unfinished work

to Kim as you
grieve for your daughter
