You’re trying to get somewhere
and each door you open
leads you into another dream
and you seem to be getting further
and further from the place
you know you have to be
and you begin to panic,
think you’ll be late, miss
the very thing this is all about,
you’ll be shamed for not
arriving at the place
you set out for and then
you look back and see a silk thread
caught in a door, it leads you
back and back and you follow it,
and when you arrive at the starting point
everyone has grown old or left or died
and the landscape is bathed in last light
of afternoon and you keep following
the silk as it wraps its way
around things, and then
leaves you with the frayed end
and you know that what has kept you sane
all this time is that longing, that thread of love.
