Video: Lee Mokobe — A powerful poem about what it feels like to be transgender

“I was the mystery of an anatomy, a question asked but not answered,” says poet Lee Mokobe in this gripping and poetic exploration of identity and transition.

Based in Cape Town, Lee Mokobe is an award-winning slam poet and the founder of Vocal Revolutionaries, a volunteer-run literary organization focused on empowering African youth. In 2013, Mokobe’s South African slam poetry team, also called Vocal Revolutionaries, made it to the final stage of the Brave New Voices global poetry competition in Chicago. The first team from the African continent to compete, they came second of the 55 teams.
