Chard deNiord: Lost Things

You find other lost things while looking for the lost thing,

things that are consolations for what’s missing,

things you also looked for with the same intensity

that faded in the days following your search for the coin

that was on the table right there before it disappeared

on tiny invisible feet to hide on oblivion’s doorstep,

things that were there all along like the thing you’re looking for now.

If only you could open the drawer and find it waiting for you

like a cat who’s found the perfect hiding place to sleep all day

undisturbed but will never tell you where it is or make a sound

as you pass by again and again, that close to the thing that’s gone.
