Chard deNiord: I Was Swimming
I was swimming with you in a river
that was both rushing and still.
Remember?
“How can that be?” you asked.
“Don’t ask,” I said.
In the calm after our lovemaking you said,
“Even the hardest thing is soft.
Pray in vain for those on the bank
who are deluded by stone.”
“I will,” I said.
“Is it time?” you asked.
“No, although we’re in it,” I said.
“Our bodies flowed into each other and then together.
There was a sea toward which we were headed.
How long we grew in the electric water
for only the second it took to name the river.
To shine in the setting sun before
we disappeared forever.”

And my morning traveled with me to Colorado, grandsons already at school, I meditate with two Great Danes and a mini Aussie. Time to figure out my daughter’s coffee maker. The poem brings me back to quiet mornings and I will read it again worth my coffee.

First morning read, sun streaming in my window, steam from fresh coffee, spiked with turmeric, cloves and cinnamon, I paused to read this aloud. Not that anyone is present, I live alone with my cat and a few spirits who wander in from time to time. Anyway, as I said, i read this aloud, as the energies of each word filled my space, tears, more tears, your poem told a story I have experienced, but some would call me crazy. Thank you for writing something so exquisite, my day will certainly be blessed.
