Doug Anderson: How it happens

I woke up one morning and knew I loved her.
It just happened. Began with admiration
then a crack appeared in my heart, widening
into a flood. I think I can’t take it—
my body can’t survive what runs through it
and then I am light as light resting on stone.
I want to know the soul’s trajectory
and am so often wandering in the dark,
finding my footing by the dim glow of memory.
So long hanging in the Sargasso,
then a cat’s paw of wind. And now the storm.
God help me, I don’t know where I’m going.
We hold each other’s hand like children
finding our way home among the closing wolves.

Make me a pallet down on the floor? How about a sofa, Doug, among The wind blown and softly fallen? Swell poem, swell photo, stay calm, And carry on. We began in protein, Like the virus, and we’ll end in carbon, Like the leaves, and not as pretty.

This poem poked me gently and said, “ See, it can happen.”
