Elizabeth Romero: Route Six

Tonight the lights of the car

Illuminate the tops of the trees

We talk of where the country’s going

The silence of the politicians on certain subjects

Poverty, suffering, torture

A bad time is coming we agree

I peer ahead at the changing shades of gray

On the road ahead

A light rain falls

We seem to move forward but we don’t we say

I pray we don’t hit an animal

I feel afraid

I think how fast things happen

I imagine the car plunging off the road

How we could be jolted

Shocked

Lost

In the dark tall grass
