I hope others will read and share this. I remain convinced and have been so for most of my life, that we are born with little other than the desires to be fed, to excrete our waste, to sleep, to be at peace, but most of all to be loved and having received that love, to quickly learn to love in return. Pretty much all of the rest that we have within us is learned or drummed into us by influences that surround and bombard us every moment of our lives. As much as I hate and struggle against forces that harm others, I do not believe that those who carry out the wishes of those powerful forces were born that way and therefore cannot change and become a more compassionate and empathetic individual. As a revolutionary who believes that systems such as capitalism must be overturned and replaced, I cannot believe otherwise for to believe otherwise is to lose faith in the other humans who inhabit this planet. Yes, we will not change the very rich for, as the research here shows, they have no empathy, but they are few in number and we are many. The fist is always more powerful than the separate fingers.

Thanks, Mel! It’s been well-established in primate research that compassion and generosity are innate tendencies. But exactly how this plays out in public policy is difficult to determine.
