Daniel R. Cobb: Democracy Dies Without You

Everything that lives needs sustenance.  Every rose. Every child. Without sustenance, life perishes.

Democracy is a living thing because it embodies the vibrant, shining hopes and dreams of the people.  Democracy is not just about the people themselves, but their intentions, their hopes and dreams –  their vote. What good is a dream that is never embraced?  What good is hoped-for change without the courage to pursue it?

We hope for social justice, for sentencing and incarceration reforms for minorities, an end to the rampant bigotry, racism and misogyny, and an end to skyrocketing hate crimes. We demand gun law reforms, campaign finance reform, meaningful Wall Street regulations, drug policy reforms, and affordable and robust healthcare.  We demand responsible corporate tax rates, an end to the trillions in Republican tax giveaways to themselves, an end to the war on Social Security and Medicaid, a government committed to addressing climate change and so much more.

We want responsible government. But dreaming and hoping for responsible government will not change a thing.  Your hopes and dreams must be expressed and infused into our Democracy, by your vote. Democracy is only about We the People if We express our Will, though our Vote.

Elections are the Lifeblood of Democracy, and each and every Vote, the expressed values, the hopes and dreams of every voter – is a blood cell in the veins. Democracy can only be sustained and nurtured by your Vote.

To not Vote is to walk away, to abandon an incredible gift, and into that resulting power vacuum rush the greedy, the powerful, the corrupt who are exactly like a malignant cancer, growing out of control and devouring the host, your Democracy, which will absolutely perish because the disease has met no resistance – from you! From your Vote!

Your values, your hopes and dreams are the blood in the veins.

Our American Democracy is a gift, a living thing that is under grave assault. The disease of unchecked power, the cancer of unquenchable greed, have defiled and debased our elections with dark and unlimited money, widespread gerrymandering, voter registration purges, corrupt courts and politicians, and election day interference and intimidation.  Our Democracy is dying, starving for your Vote, bleeding out before our eyes. Without your Vote, it will perish.  Don’t let this happen. Don’t be the generation that let this great Democracy die.

Vote.

“Your hopes and dreams must be expressed and infused into our Democracy, by your vote.” It is “YOUR” Election Day. No matter what your beliefs, it is your day to cast your vote for your Democracy.
